A suggestion is that the tree 木 represents property. katakana ノ represents belonging. Katakana ム means ‘all of it’. As 私 also means ‘private’ in the combination 私立, it could be that having property meant you were an ‘entity’, like a legal body. The smallest legal body would have been ‘me’.
