Sushi in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is well-know for fishing and therefore fish is high on the traditional Hokkaido menu. Salmon, squid, tuna and other sorts of fish are widely consumed. Hokkaido also has sheep farms and some cattle farms, but this page is about delicious fish from Hokkaido.

The origami variety.

Crab meat is particularly sought after in many Hokkaido restaurants as the quality is exceptional.

One crab costs between NZ$150 and NZ$180.

The origami master’s impression.

On this platter one can see squid and different kinds of shell fish.

This is salmon roe, a dish that is regarded a delicacy. Salmon roe is very high on vitamins and omega 3. It is eaten with a spoon, although sometimes one can see it on top of a sushi-bite, which has seaweed wrapped around it in order to keep the bite nicely together.

Snow in Japan 雪 ゆき snow

雪 ゆき snow

For people who live in parts of the world where there is no snow – ever – it must be hard to imagine the beauty and the burden of snow. As Japan is a north-south country the climate ranges from almost polar to almost tropical. Therefore it is hard to make statements about Japanese people and what they do in their spare time, or indeed during the different seasons. The climate varies too much.

Hold your breath and see how some Japanese people have to cope:

It is quite a surprise to non-Japanese people that Russia is Japan’s geographic neighbour and not China.

A similar mistake is made about the language. Apart from borrowed writing, kanji, and vocabulary there is no real connection between the two countries and cultures. China is more of an emotionally strong, yet technically distant neighbour. It is more about feelings and perceptions, trade and historical links than factual geographical connections.
