This cup was purchased in Nagasaki where the settlement of the Dutch in the 17th century is commemorated. The Japanese at the time would have noticed the different clothes, the curly (blond) hair, the big (blue) eyes and the big nose. This picture is a copy of an early sketch.

The other side of the cup shows one of the early schooners to arrive in Nagasaki.

There is a range of cups with a lot of writing on them. The traditional, expensive ones would have had poetry on them. These days with modern printing techniques almost anything can go on the outside. The most common ones are cups used by the various sushi bars. The text could be containing humour, advice, wisdom, fish information etc. We collected a number from a few 回転寿司 かいてんずし kaitenzushi conveyor-belt sushi shops. 

We’d just like to make a point that we bought a couple and the others were donated after a great dinner outing. These days one can buy them directly from wholesalers.

This cup display all sorts of fish with the ‘fish’ kanji. A great way to teach adults how difficult fish kanji are written.
