Hanko seal

In everyday usage Japanese people speak of はんこ hanko, meaning the signature stamp. The more formal word for はんこ hanko is 印鑑いんかん inkan. When you wish to reside more permanently in Japan, one needs to be registered with the local City Council. You would need to take your identification papers etc. together with your はんこ; this is called hanko registration, or 印鑑証明いんかんしょうめい inkan-shōmei.

Mr An-pan to the rescue! Yeah!

One of the many cartoon characters that Japanese children grow up with is Mr Anpan. An-pan is a little bun with sweet bean paste inside. Japanese children love it.

The company has had this character designed and his mission in life is to promote the company doing good deeds. Anpan-man to the rescue! Therefore he needs a Mr Nasty, Mr Baikin-man. Fortunately for the children, the world and the Japanese economy: Mr Anpan is always victorious. Yeah!

Yeah, An-pan-man, you give us hope and a will to live!

Chef’s Special or Chef’s Recommendation お任せ　おまかせ

おまかせ　Omakase means “to recommend”. It is usually used for meals. Therefore one often sees the word on a Japanese menu: “The Chef Recommends”, or “Chef’s Special”. However, this is not exclusively so. One may also see it as a recommendation for other matters as well.

Mind you, one doesn’t need to be a chef to recommend these meals!

(do bring your wallet or your platinum-credit card though)

Here the recommendation is the home-page for a computer business. It’s unbelievably-cheap, unbelievably-convenient and unbelievably-good-business-practice. It would seem.
