Here are some examples of how kanji can be used. Sometimes the kanji is used in this way: one picture only and one can visualise its meaning. Sometimes it is used in a combination with other kanji, but the meaning is still clear. Sometimes it is used as part of a bigger kanji and it offers a sub-meaning. Sometimes the kanji is there purely for the sound associated with it. And sometimes a certain kanji combination has gained a completely different pronunciation from what one would expect. These are the reasons why kanji at an advanced level are difficult. Mind you, spelling in English is diabolical already at the lowest level. Never mind.

This is a little side-line: this word has nothing to do with the kanji that is being explained. This is just a word that sounds exactly the same – that’s all. Ghosts in the trees perhaps.
