Medicine, medical remedy. Useful kanji around Japan: Doctor

医者 いしゃ isha  doctor

 Town Doctor Jumbo

The arrow suggests ‘accurately hitting the inside’. しゃ sha means ‘educated person’
お医者 おいしゃ oisha means doctor
PS: Although most people talk about the doctor as おいしゃさん oishasan, you should not forget that when you visit a doctor you refer to him/her as せんせい sensei.

Professions in katakana

In the modern Japanese world more and more English words are coming into the language. There are various reasons for this: fashion, newly invented jobs in industry, young-people-being-up-to-date, advertising, but also often because the job is set in another country.

The Japanese media would have used the same English word, but because Japanese is a phonetic language and all words need to fit into the katakana script, we sometimes don’t recognise the original word anymore. Just sound out the word.

Mind you, often there is a correct originally-Japanese word for the job, but it just doesn’t have the same “feeling” for young people.
